2022 年 第 39 号 TUT 同窓会報 15 Integrated Photonic Device Group Piedra Lorenzana Jose Alberto Howareyoudoing, graduatesandalumni? Ihopethat youare all doingwell. The Integrated Photonic Device Group is under the direction of Professor Ishikawa Yasuhiko and Assistant Professor Piedra Lorenzana Jose Alberto, with 12 students (including 8 in master’s course and 4 in undergraduate course). In this laboratory, we are working in Silicon photonics. Silicon photonics is a technology that integrates ultrasmallphotonicdevicesonaSi chipusingLSIprocesses. Such integrated photonic devices are strongly required for low-power and high-capacity information transmission. High-performance active photonic devices operating at the near-infrared communication wavelengths (1.3-1.6 µm) are integrated on a Si chip with passive photonic devices such as optical waveguidesandoptical filters.Novelphotonicdevices usinggroup-IVepitaxial layersonSiareproposedand realized. Ge is an indirect bandgap semiconductor that have shown excellent optical properties similar to direct semiconductors by applying band engineering. Novel photonic devices are under investigations such as optical intensity/phase modulators and light emitters (particularly, lasers).Thislaboratorycarriesoutstate of theartGeepitaxialgrowthonSibyUHV-CVD,been the only laboratory inJapan till the date. Our research is focused on3 themes: 1) Si-basedwaveguides 2) Ge-on-Si photodetectors 3)Novel Ge-on-Si devices (suchas lasers) This laboratory holds collaboration with overseas researchers belonging to prestigious institutions such as theMIT(USA) and theKOOKMINUniversity (Korea), this allows us to remain at the forefront and expand the scope of our research. As a newmember of this group, I amvery happy with the way I have been received, all the members have been very kind to me. adapting to a new work environment is always a challenge, just like adapting to a foreign country. Particularly life in Toyohashi is very peaceful and refreshing compared to the daily hustle and bustle of the big cities. Coming to Toyohashi University of Technology has allowed me to meet people of different nationalities, which has been such an enriching experience that allowed me to perceive such differentpointsof viewandculturaldifferencesexisting in our world. There are foreigners of different nationalities who are always open to cultural exchange and new friendships. Participating in the different clubs is an excellent opportunity to get to knowmany people. The past years have been a real challenge due the corona virus which has restricted our daily activities andthetravelopportunities, butwecontinuetodoour best to carry out our research. As this year concludes, on behalf of the integrated photonics group we would like towishyouabove all goodhealthand further success on this coming year.
